Relief initiatives for those affected by the catastrophic floods in Thessaly.

Solidarity is a foundation of human society. It is the necessary encouragement and support in order to face life's challenges.

Last September, Thessaly experienced one of the most catastrophic disasters in recent years, with heavy rains causing severe flooding. Homes were destroyed, entire communities were evacuated, while critical infrastructure - roads, bridges and other networks – was damaged, causing significant disruption to the residents and the local economy. The agricultural sector also suffered huge losses, with flooded fields making it impossible to sow and harvest, while many animals were left to die or perished due to the disaster.

This crisis highlighted the need for more effective protection measures, for better management of water resources, as well as the strengthening of infrastructure to deal with similar natural disasters in the future.

But at the same time, it also highlighted the solidarity shown by ordinary people, who rushed to help the victims and relieve them from the consequences of the disaster.

Right from the start, Kind Things Nonprofit Foundation, designed a plan to support the people who were significantly affected. This plan was implemented in three steps, offering relief and support to residents of the region of Thessaly.

In September 2023, three trucks delivered boxes with food, blankets, tents, clothes, etc., to 200 families in Marathea and 15 families in Palamas. The boxes were given by the people of the foundation, hand to hand, to those in immediate need.

Provision of meals

This initiative was about the provision of 50 vegan meals per day - from 22.12.2023 to 29.02.2024 - in Megala Kalyvia, Trikala. It was carried out in collaboration with the Social Care department of the Municipality of Trikkaia. The meals were collected at the Community Store, where they were collected by the Community President and delivered to 50 of our vulnerable fellow citizens, who were already struggling to survive.
Meals were provided during the period when the residents were being transported to containers and the need for food had to be met until their relocation was completed. The provision of meals was implemented with the valuable help of Kalambaka catering service. This initiative also strengthen the local economy. The total number of meals provided was 3,500.

Provision of gift vouchers

The initiative was about the provision of Super Market gift vouchers to the residents of Metamorfosi Karditsa, which was severely damaged. The village has been completely evacuated, while restoration work is gradually being carried out.

The beneficiaries were the residents who lived permanently in the village, their first main residence was damaged and they were forced to relocate due to the flood. A total of 114 gift vouchers were offered to 240 beneficiaries and the amounts allocated were in proportion to the number of people per household.

At Kind Things Foundation, we know that by supporting each other, we create a strong and resilient society, ready to face difficulties and create a better world for all of us.
